The Pyrenees, life size

2hrs

View over the 3000's

In summer, the Pyrenees are one of the most popular destinations for ramblers in search of unspoiled landscapes, panoramas sretching to the horizon, secret high-altitude lakes, either littlle-known, or easy to reach with children. Sometimes, the pleasure lies in making your way up to a staffed mountain refuge, eating and spending the night there, to experience the high mountain area to the full. There's bound to be something that suits you : adapted to your physical capacities, and to the needs of your family. Family walks along signposted paths in complete safety, full or half-day rambles, several day excursions…

The variety of activities is constantly growing : MBK descents, cycling holidays, paragliding, fishing, caving, climbing, horse riding, rafting and other white-water sports…

The Central Pyrenees provide you with a wide choice. In winter, whether you're an experienced, occasional or first-time skier, the snowy slopes of Luchon-Superbagnères, Peyragudes, Le Mourtis and Bourg d’Oueil await you. However, in summer the mountains once more become the kingdom of the summer pastures, where cows and sheep graze under the watchful eyes of their herdsmen. Here, the origins of pastoralism go back into the mists of Time.

The Pyrenees constitute a refuge for a number of animal species : the iconic chamois, a rock-climbing tight-rope walker, the cute marmots, easy to spot from footpaths, the great birds of prey which circle high above, such as the Griffon vulture, golden eagles, the bearded vulture… You won't see the brown bear or the capercaillie, as they are rare, secretive, and hide deep in the forests. But the fact that they are present here is proof of the healthy condition of the Pyrenean habitat, the large wild mountain area of southern Europe.
