Rieux-Volvestre, a town rich in heritage

2h

A centuries-old halt on the Saint James way

Tucked into a meander of the Arize, a tributary of the nearby Garonne, this former seat of a bishop has a rich architectural and historic heritage, with its fortified cathedral in the meridional style, its tall bell-tower with an octagonal base and with an upper section just like that of Les Jacobins in Toulouse, the treasury containing some of the principal pieces from the former bishops' palace…In the town centre, with its mediaeval layout, there is a magnificent half-timbered house, and a renovated market hall with 15th C. brick pillars and  roof timbers. In early August, the Jacobins park and La Tourasse, a 13th C. tower, once possession of the local lord, which has been renovated as an Italian-style theatre, serve as a venue for the Théâtrales de Rieux et du Volvestre.
